Bossa New Wave

Nouvelle Vague from France (and meaning new wave) does all covers of punk and new wave songs from the 80's in a bossa nova fashion. All very chilled out, they're great covers of great songs and they really explore them in new ways. a classy listen all around.

Here's some tracks from NPR, live at World Cafe, Nov. 21, 2005:
-Just Can't get enough.mp3
-Guns Of Brixton.mp3
-Ever Fallen In Love.mp3

more info on the live tunes above and a short invterview check out B(oot)log.

cyan, magenta, yellow and black flag?

I love Black Flag and CMYK isn't bad either. It only made sense.

"Nervous Breakdown" By Black Flag live at the Calderon Ballroom in Phoenix, AZ 1982.
(I got this mp3 from shavedneck.com, a punk flyer archive with a bunch of live mp3's.)

sister site

Last night I built a fairly simple website for my sister's photography. She needed a site built quickly, so instead of taking the time to create a gallery of images, I used a pre-made slideshow programmed in xml. Most pre-made slideshows I find tacky and ugly; however, this is an all-around great thing. Simple to use, easy to change your photos out. It's made by Air Tight Interactive and is called simpleviewer. It's free to use and worth checking out. I used Golive for the basic pages and the uploading of everything to the ftp. Granted, it's not as classy as building your own, but for a quick and easy fix it's pretty rad. Check out Air Tight's webpage, they have a lot of cool stuff, as well as some other slideshows. And go to my sister's site.

change is all the rage (part 2)

Sitting between Prospect Heights and Fort Greene in Brooklyn, New York, lay the Atlantic Avenue rail yards. Bruce Ratner of Forest City has proposed a plan for 16 to 20 skyscrapers and an 20,000 seat arena that will cost taxpayers nearly 2 billion dollars. This project would fill seven large blocks, from Flatbush to Vanderbilt Avenues, and from Atlantic Avenue to Dean Street. That's almost 1.5 times the size of the entire World Trade Center site. Any local business in the path of this project will be removed and replaced with name brand chain stores.

The biggest development ever proposed in Brooklyn has had no input from the local community and will have no input or oversight from our city council, community boards, or the state legislature. The city will condemn homes and businesses, tie up tax dollars for the billionaire developer, but refuse the input of the people. An unaccountable state public corporation, the Empire State Development Corporation (ESDC), will oversee the project and override ALL local zoning.

change is all the rage.

The Brighter Ideas Project is an energy conservation campaign focused on informing individuals about the many ways they can make a positive impact on the environment, the lives of others, and their wallet through energy conservation.

Headed up by Mark Bedard, Brighter Ideas is not trying to sell anything, is not an official non-profit orginazation, and has no monetary sponsers. The goal of Brighter Ideas is to spread the word about the state our world is in and how to try and lessen our impact on it.

"Many people don't think about the energy they use, because it's not part of our culture. This needs to change. My hope for this project is to create an opportunity for people to talk about energy conservation, and to incorporate more of the actions described on the project's web site into their daily habits." - Bedard

m. ward

I've totally been digging M. Ward lately. He reminds me a bit of early Tom Waits and a little Ryan Adams, not to say that he's not entirely his own thing. His newest album "Post-War" is definitely his most solid work yet. But check my favorite M. Ward track Vincent O'Brien, from his 3rd solo album "The Transfiguration of Vincent".

Imprint 7" Artwork

I finished the first draft of the Imprint 7" artwork today. It's based off of an older design I have never used, but the band liked it. It's a composite of pictures I've taken around the city of buildings that I like. Take a look at my flickr page to check out the rest. And for some sick jams check out Imprint.
